Moving Tips from the Pros

Preparing for your Move:

  • The #1 thing that will save us time and ensure a safe and efficient move is proper packing. Any small, fragile, or miscellaneous items should be packed in boxes or storage totes. This includes electronics, computer equipment, TVs, lamps, lamp shades, artwork, etc.
  • Boxes should be taped shut (top and bottom) and labeled by room. This will save us time on the unload and ensure that they go to the right places, plus this will help you keep things organized. Storage totes should have lids on top. Closed boxes and totes are stackable, and their contents will travel more safely.
  • Appliances: All appliances should be disconnected before the move.
  • Refrigerators and freezers should be completely emptied and defrosted before we arrive. This is also a good time to clean them thoroughly.
  • Empty and pack the contents of the furniture.
  • Disconnect cords/wires/cables for TVs, computers/stereo/appliances. Secure them with a rubber band, tape, or place them in a ziplock bag, along with remote controls.

Before Ken’s Neat Movers arrive:

  • Separate any items that we will not be moving, or that you will be handling yourself (personal items, medications, eyeglasses, perishable items, loose fragile items, etc).
  • If we are making multiple pick-ups or drop-offs, please provide us with complete addresses before moving day, and let us know which items are going to which location. This will save us time on moving day, and we can load the truck accordingly.
  • Prepare or reserve a parking space ahead of time for the moving van.
  • Elevators – Please reserve elevators for your move if possible. This can save everyone a lot of time and avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Occasionally, doors or stair railings may have to be removed in order to get some large items through doorways or up/down stairs. We can usually remove doors if needed, but if you know for example, that a railing needs to be removed to get an item or items in or out, it’s helpful to have that done before we arrive, if possible.
  • We are happy to move your items from wherever they are, but sometimes people will move boxes or smaller items up from the basement, or down from attic or 2nd floor so they are closer to the entrance, garage, or where the truck will be. This can save us time going up and down stairs.
